Best for a dinner that rolls into a night out, with cocktails, live music and a terrace. The trade-off: $$$ prices add up fast on small plates, and late at night it's more lounge than restaurant.

What to order

The menu reads Mediterranean first, with Asian touches mixed in: edamame at $9, feta-filled vegetable dumplings with ponzu at $18, and torched tuna carpaccio with capers and fish sauce at $22. The velvet octopus with mashed potatoes, black olives and tomato confit is $25, the same price as the mushroom ravioli with truffle sauce. For a table that wants to graze, the Italian meat and cheese board runs $36. The croquette trio of braised meat, Parma ham with Parmigiano, and creamed cod is a $15 way to start without committing. A few shared plates plus cocktails gets expensive quickly, so pace yourself.

Terrace or inside

Sha splits into a garden terrace and a smaller, more intimate indoor room, and the choice shapes the night. Ask for the terrace when the weather cooperates. Pick inside if you'd rather sit close and let the room do the work. The designers, Juan E Shamizo and Alexandr Sasha Danilov, leaned hard on lighting and sound, so this is a space built for mood, not bright tables. It's rated 4.7 from about 1,700 Google reviews, which is a solid number for a place this nightlife-heavy. The name, for the record, is Cajun slang for darling, borrowed from the French cher.

When the DJ shows up

Weekday service starts at 4 pm, and as the evening goes on the place turns into a lounge with live music and DJs. Thursday and Friday run until 3 am, Monday and Wednesday until 1 am, and Tuesday until midnight. Weekends open at noon with a brunch menu, closing at midnight Saturday and 11 pm Sunday. There's a cocktails and hookah menu plus a happy hour menu, though the site doesn't list happy hour times, so ask. Cocktails lean on fresh botanicals and house-made syrups. Book early if you want conversation, late if you want the party.
