Monty's is the Grove's original waterfront hangout: a thatched bar on the bay with oysters and stone crab in season, live music, a pool you can look at, and a weeknight happy hour that is the real reason people come.

Why you go

Because it has been doing the same thing for decades and the thing is right: a raw bar, fried seafood, buckets of beer, music on the deck and the marina as the backdrop. Nobody dresses up. It is where the Grove goes after work and where visitors end up when they want Miami without the velvet rope.

When to go

Weeknight happy hour from late afternoon, or Saturday afternoon for the live music. Open 11:30 am to 10 pm Sunday to Thursday and until 11 pm Friday and Saturday. Sunset from the deck is the moment.

Know before you go

$$, cheaper during happy hour. The address is 2550 S Bayshore Drive at the marina; there is a parking lot and valet. It is outdoors, so rain changes the plan.

1. The nearest Metrorail station is Coconut Grove, about 16 minutes on foot. The free trolley stops at South Bayshore Drive & Aviation Avenue, 1 minute away. Parking, according to Google: valet, a paid lot, a free lot, paid street parking and free street parking.
