Why people pick Crandon

Crandon Park is the Miami-Dade County beach park on Key Biscayne, across the Rickenbacker Causeway from Brickell. Its beach is two miles long, with calm water, a promenade, concession stands and picnic areas with tables and grills. The county describes the water as calm, with an offshore sandbar that shifts with the weather and currents.

That makes it the family pick, and the county's lifeguards work there 365 days a year from 8 am to 6 pm. Beach wheelchairs are available for people with limited mobility, and a beachside water sports concession runs kiteboarding rentals and lessons.

The county lists the main park office open daily 8 am to 5 pm. It does not give a separate closing time for the beach, so plan to be back at the car by sunset.

Rules that catch visitors out

Glass containers are not allowed anywhere in the park. Pets are banned too, except service animals, so a dog day needs a different beach. Flotation devices are banned in the bathing areas under the county code.

You cannot launch your own kayak or paddleboard from the beach. The county allows beach launches only through an EcoAdventures tour or the water sports concession; private boats and boards go in at the Crandon Park Marina.
