Miami on a budget: free transit, free art, and the hotel fees that wreck the plan
How to do Miami for less: the free trolleys and Metromover, the $2.25 train, free museum hours, budget beds and the resort fees to dodge.
En bref
- Getting around: Free trolleys in Miami and Miami Beach, free Metromover, $2.25 Metrorail.
- Fare change: Metrorail and bus go to $2.75 on January 1, 2027.
- Free art: ICA Miami is always free; PAMM is free on Thursdays after 5 pm.
- Budget bed: Freehand Miami's bunk rooms in Mid-Beach; book 3+ nights ahead for 20% off.
- The trap: Resort fees and valet: $50 a night plus $60 valet at one South Beach hotel.
Miami gets cheap when you skip the car: sleep near a free trolley line, ride Metrorail from the airport, and spend on one good dinner instead of resort fees and valet.
Ce que ça coûte
Miami Beach's trolley runs four routes, 8 am to 11 pm daily; the City of Miami trolley runs 13 routes; Metromover is free downtown and in Brickell
every public beach is free; Lummus Park on Ocean Drive has restrooms, changing rooms and outdoor gyms
one ride, including the train from MIA; it rises to $2.75 on January 1, 2027
tap the same contactless card or phone all day and the county caps the fare at $5.65
city meter rate, enforced 9 am to 3 am; city lots are $2 an hour
Get around without a car
A car is the most expensive thing you can add to a Miami trip, between parking, valet and tolls. The free options cover more ground than visitors expect. Miami Beach's citywide trolley is free, runs four routes (South Beach Loop, Middle Beach Loop, Collins Express and North Beach Loop) from 8 am to 11 pm every day, and comes about every 20 minutes. The city covers the premium tier of the Transit app, so live tracking costs you nothing.
On the mainland, the City of Miami trolley is free too, with 13 routes including Brickell, Wynwood, Little Havana, Coconut Grove and Biscayne. Buses come every 15 to 45 minutes, and most routes run from 6:30 am to 11 pm on weekdays; several do not run on Sunday. It does not cross to Miami Beach. Metromover, the elevated loop through downtown and Brickell, is free.
Metrorail and Metrobus cost $2.25 a ride, according to the county's February 2026 fare guide, and tapping a contactless card or phone caps your spending at $5.65 a day. Plan for a change soon: in October 2026 the county approved a rise to $2.75 from January 1, 2027. From the airport, Metrorail leaves from the MIA station; for Miami Beach, the county lists Route 150 as an express from the MIA Metrorail station over the Julia Tuttle Causeway, but we could not confirm its fare on an official page, so check it in the GO Miami-Dade app.
Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami
ICA Miami does not charge admission. Galleries open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm, and close on Monday and Tuesday.
Book a free advance ticket online: the museum says it is highly recommended for guaranteed entry. Groups larger than nine need a group tour reservation.
Pérez Art Museum Miami
PAMM costs $18 for adults, but Thursdays after 5 pm are free, and on Thursdays the museum stays open until 9 pm. It is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Children 6 and under, US military and veterans, and Florida educators with ID always get in free. The museum stops selling tickets 30 minutes before closing.
Où ils sont
The fees that wreck a cheap rate
| Where | Fee | What it means for a budget |
|---|---|---|
| Loews Miami Beach | Resort fee $50 a night plus tax; overnight valet $60 | Self-park in the public garage across the street for $20 a day instead |
| Hotel Greystone | Resort fee $42 a night; valet $53.50 a night | Listed on its Michelin page; nearly $100 a night before the room |
| 1 Hotel South Beach | Parking $62.06 a day | From its Michelin listing; a car doubles the fee pain |
| Mr. C Miami, Coconut Grove | Service fee $25 | Covers coffee, Wi-Fi, laundry and South Beach beach access |
| Regency Miami Airport by Sonesta | Self-parking $20 plus tax a night | Free 24-hour airport shuttle, so you may not need the car |
Fees change; the booking page shows the total before you pay. Compare the all-in price, not the nightly rate.

Budget hotels: where the cheap beds are
The cheapest way to sleep near the beach is a bunk room. Freehand Miami, at 2727 Indian Creek Drive in Mid-Beach, sells private quad rooms with four twin beds and an eight-bed room with two bathrooms, which a group can split. Its own offers include 20% off stays of three nights or more booked at least seven days ahead and a fourth-night-free deal; newsletter subscribers get another 10% off. The Broken Shaker bar and a pool are on site.
The other budget pool is around the airport and Doral. MIA lists 34 hotels with free shuttles that pick up at the arrivals level, Level 1, at doors 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 15, 20, 23, 24 and 28. They suit a short stay, a late arrival or a trip built around Metrorail, not a beach holiday.
Our separate guide to cheap hotels in Miami Beach compares the beach-side options in more detail.
