Collins Park is the easy South Beach entry point for a first visit: a lawn, a museum and a wide public beach on the same block; the trade-off is that it is busy and you pay for parking nearby.
Why you go
You come for an easy way onto the beach in the north part of South Beach. The park is a wide lawn between Collins Avenue and the ocean, with the Bass Museum of Art and the public library on one side and the beachwalk path on the other. Cross the dunes and you are on the sand at 21st Street. It rates 4.6 from more than 4,000 Google reviews, mostly from people who used it as their way into the water.
When to go
Google lists the park at 7 am to 7 pm every day. Mornings before 10 am are calm and good for a walk along the beachwalk. Midday on weekends the sand in front fills with hotel guests and day visitors. Late afternoon the buildings start to shade the lawn, which makes it a comfortable place to sit before dinner in South Beach.
Know before you go
Parking is metered on the street and in the city garages a few blocks away; it fills fast on weekends, so a rideshare is easier. There are no big beach concessions inside the park itself, so bring water and a towel or rent a chair on the sand. The beachwalk runs north from here toward Mid Beach, and South Beach proper with Lummus Park is a walk of about 20 blocks south.
