Why you go

Because getting in is half the fun and the other half holds up. You step into a red London phone booth on Brickell Avenue, dial a code, and the wall opens into a dark room of leather, low light and people who feel pleased with themselves. The cocktails are classic and strong, there's a real dinner menu, and the cigar lounge is sealed off so you don't go home smelling like one.

How to get the code

Ask your hotel concierge, ask a friend who's been, or bite the bullet and become a member. Don't try to talk your way past the booth; the whole point is that it doesn't work.

Know before you go

Dress like it's dinner. Weeknights are relaxed and you can sit at the bar; weekends you want a reservation once you have the code. $$ for the drinks, more if the cigar list tempts you.
