Good for curious adults, couples and anyone who wants a museum stop that runs until midnight on weekends. The trade-off: it's niche by design, and the lighthearted reputation can undersell how much real history is on display.

What's on the walls

A Tom of Finland clay plaque, a Bettie Page photograph, Art Deco bronzes from Austria, Italian Capodimonte porcelain and a kinetic fiberglass piece called Rocking Machine all sit in the same collection. That collection belonged to Naomi Wilzig, who gathered more than 4,000 works and opened the museum in 2005. The range is the point: drawings, sculpture, figurines, boxes with hidden art, spanning roughly 2,300 years. Some of it is genuinely beautiful, some of it is meant to make you laugh. It holds 4.3 from about 1,200 Google reviews, which tracks for a place that's both serious and a bit cheeky.

The history part

Magnus Hirschfeld gets his own gallery here. He was the German sexologist who opened the world's first museum of sexuality in Berlin in 1919, and the Nazis burned his art collection and library in 1933. That exhibit comes through a partnership with Humboldt University in Berlin, which spent five years researching Wilzig's collection. There's also a presentation on Alfred Kinsey with the Kinsey Institute, including a show called Kinsey Institute: Untold Stories, built around voices kept out of mainstream sex culture. Give these rooms real time; they're the reason the place feels like a museum and not a novelty stop.

Timing your visit

Weekday hours are 1 pm to 9 pm, Monday through Thursday. Friday to Sunday it opens at noon and stays open until midnight, which makes it one of the few museums in town you can fit in after dinner. Admission is 18 and over only, and a standard adult ticket is $20. The site lists an audioguide, a shop and photography among its services, though it doesn't spell out the details, so ask at the desk. Washington Avenue is a short walk from the beach, so it pairs easily with a rainy afternoon or a late night out.
