What a Miami breakfast looks like

The local breakfast is Cuban: a café con leche or a cortadito, buttered Cuban toast to dunk in it, a pastelito of guava or guava and cheese, and croquetas. You can have it standing at a ventanita in five minutes or sitting down at Versailles with eggs and grits.

Brunch is a separate weekend affair that usually starts later. If you want breakfast rather than brunch, go before 10 am on a weekday or use the counters above that open at 7 or 7:30 am.

Before you go

  • Weekend mornings bring lines at Chug's and the French cafés; go before 9 am or book Chug's on SevenRooms
  • Chug's and Greenstreet are both on Main Highway in Coconut Grove; pair them with a walk in the village
  • Check whether a service charge is already on the bill, as at 11th Street Diner
  • Cuban coffee is strong and sweet; a colada is for sharing
  • Zak the Baker is closed on Saturdays
  • MIAM and Café Bastille close in the afternoon; they are not dinner options
