Editor's note
Key lime pie is Florida's official state pie: the Legislature passed SB 676 in 2006, the governor signed it on June 20, 2006, and it took effect on July 1, 2006. Most best-of lists for Miami are two or more years old, and two of the most-cited pies come from restaurants that have since closed. So this guide is short on purpose: every place below showed a working official page in October 2026, and we only quote prices that the business itself publishes.
What a proper key lime pie is
The classic Florida pie is simple: key lime juice, sweetened condensed milk and egg yolks, set in a graham-cracker crust. Key limes are small, yellow-green and sharper than the big Persian limes in most supermarkets, which is why a real slice tastes tart rather than just sweet.
The two big arguments are the topping and the crust. Some kitchens finish the pie with whipped cream, others with a toasted meringue; a few use pastry instead of graham crackers. None is wrong. The filling should be pale yellow, not bright green; green usually means food coloring.
Miami is not the Florida Keys, where the pie comes from, but you do not need to drive south to get a good one. The city's best-known slice has been sold in South Beach for decades.

Versailles' dessert menu lists key lime pie alongside tres leches, guava and cream cheese pie, five kinds of flan and five cheesecakes. Prices are not on the online menu.
It is open late: 8 am to midnight Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 1 am Friday and Saturday, and 9 am to midnight Sunday. That makes it the easy answer for pie after 9 pm, when Joe's Take Away has closed.
Joe's: the slice everyone compares against
Joe's Stone Crab sits at the southern tip of South Beach, at 11 Washington Ave. The pie is on the dessert menu at $14.95 a slice. If you do not want to wait for a table, walk next door to Joe's Take Away, which began in 1987 as a pickup window and is open every day from 11:30 am to 9 pm. A 9-inch whole pie there costs $39.95.
Joe's also ships nationwide through Goldbelly, per its site. For a pie to bring home on a flight, buy it at Take Away on your last day and ask about packing; the Take Away menu sells an airplane pack for stone crabs, so ask whether it works for pie too.
