The short version

  • Closest to Miami: Dolphin Mall, 11401 NW 12th St, west of the airport, with a daily shuttle.
  • Most stores and luxury: Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, Broward: 350+ stores and the Colonnade.
  • The Premium Outlets: Florida Keys Outlet Marketplace, 250 E Palm Dr, Florida City.
  • Sales tax: 7% at all three: Florida's 6% plus a 1% county surtax.

For one outlet day from Miami, pick Dolphin Mall if you have no car, Sawgrass Mills if you want luxury labels and the biggest selection, and the Florida City outlets only when you are driving to the Keys or the Everglades anyway.

The short answer

Three outlet centers serve people searching for an outlet in Miami. Two are big enclosed malls run by Simon, Dolphin Mall in Miami-Dade and Sawgrass Mills in Broward. The third, Florida Keys Outlet Marketplace, is a smaller open-air center in Florida City, at the southern end of the county, and it is the one listed under Simon's Premium Outlets brand.

Distance from your hotel decides most of it. Dolphin Mall is the closest to the city and the only one with a daily shuttle from South Beach and downtown. Sawgrass Mills is the bigger trip and the bigger payoff. Florida City makes sense as a stop on a drive south, not as a destination.

Dolphin Mall: the easy one

Dolphin Mall is off the Dolphin Expressway, about five miles from Miami International Airport. Its shuttle, run by USA Caribbean Tours and booked through the mall's page, picks up at Collins Ave and 5th St in South Beach at 9 am, Bayside Marketplace at 9:30 am and MIA Terminals E and H at 10 am, and leaves the mall at 1 pm and 6 pm. The price is shown when you book.

Parking is free if you drive, including a garage near Old Navy Outlet. The stores are outlets and off-price chains rather than luxury labels, which makes it the practical pick for sneakers, jeans and kids' clothes.

Sawgrass Mills: the big one

Sawgrass Mills is in Sunrise, Broward County, which makes it a day trip from Miami rather than an errand. Simon calls it the largest outlet and value shopping destination in the United States, with more than 350 stores. The Colonnade Outlets, its open-air luxury section, holds more than 70 outlets that Simon says you will not find elsewhere in South Florida, among them Burberry, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Prada and Tory Burch.

Simon does not run its own shuttle from Miami. Its travel page lists private transfer companies instead, and the 595 Express bus from Brickell is a weekday commuter route. If you do not drive, budget for a transfer.

Florida City: the Premium Outlets stop

Florida Keys Outlet Marketplace is at 250 E Palm Drive in Florida City, the last town before US 1 heads into the Keys. Its own page places it about five miles from Biscayne National Park and ten miles from the main entrance of Everglades National Park, and lists more than 50 name brands.

It is smaller and quieter than the other two, which is the point: a break on a drive to Key Largo or the Everglades. The center's own page has shown both 10 am to 9 pm and 11 am to 8 pm, so check the live hours before you plan a stop.

Before you go

  • Sales tax is 7% at all three: 6% state plus 1% county surtax in Miami-Dade and in Broward
  • Florida has no tax refund for visitors, so compare prices after tax
  • Ask guest services at Dolphin Mall or Sawgrass Mills about the coupon book before you buy
  • Holiday hours change at all three around Thanksgiving and Christmas
  • Check the outlet's directory for your brand; outlets open and close more often than full-price stores
  • If you take the Dolphin Mall shuttle, the last return leaves at 6 pm
