In breve

  • With kids: Frost Science, 1101 Biscayne Blvd, adults from $29.95, plan 3 to 4 hours.
  • Art on the bay: PAMM next door, closed Tuesday and Wednesday, open until 9 pm Thursday.
  • House and gardens: Vizcaya, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, closed Tuesday.
  • Cuban Miami: Freedom Tower, 600 Biscayne Blvd, $18, Wednesday to Sunday.
  • Free Friday night: The Wolfsonian in South Beach, free every Friday 6 to 9 pm.

Take the Metromover to Museum Park and do the Frost and PAMM in one day, give Vizcaya its own morning, and check the day of the week before anything else: most of these close on Monday or Tuesday, and PAMM closes on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Frost Science

1101 Biscayne Blvd, Museum Park · Downtown · Aperto fino alle 6 pm

The museum most people search for, and the one families plan a whole day around. Three things under one roof: an aquarium built around a huge tank you see from the top and from below, where sharks and rays pass overhead; a dome planetarium with timed shows; and science halls kids are meant to touch. Terraces face the bay.

Adults from $29.95, youth 4 to 11 from $24.95, 3 and under free, and prices change by date, so buy online and pick the planetarium time at the same moment. Open 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Thursday and to 6 pm Friday to Sunday. Arrive at opening on weekends and rainy days. The garage is $18 flat, card only; the Metromover is free.

02 · Art on the bay

PAMM

1103 Biscayne Blvd, Museum Park · Downtown · Aperto fino alle 6 pm

The art museum next door to the Frost, on the waterfront in Museum Park, showing modern and contemporary international art. Doing both in one day is the easiest museum plan in Miami: one Metromover stop, one walk across the park, science in the morning and art in the afternoon.

Mind the odd schedule: closed Tuesday and Wednesday, open 11 am to 6 pm Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and until 9 pm on Thursday, the best evening slot of any museum in this guide. It rates 4.5 from almost eight thousand Google reviews. Check current shows and ticket prices on pamm.org.

Vizcaya
03 · House and gardens

Vizcaya

3251 S Miami Ave, Coconut Grove · Coconut Grove · Aperto fino alle 4:30 pm

A historic estate on the bay with a mansion from around 1914, formal gardens, sculptures and grottos. It has more Google reviews than any other museum in this guide, more than sixteen thousand at 4.7, and much of the visit is outdoors in the gardens, so plan for the sun as much as for the rooms.

Open 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, closed Tuesday. Go in the morning, before the heat and the summer afternoon storms. If you would rather see it from the water, the Mizner's Dream sunset cruise from Miami Beach Marina sails out to Vizcaya. Ticket prices are on vizcaya.org.

ICA Miami
04 · Design District art

ICA Miami

61 NE 41st St, Design District · Design District · Aperto fino alle 6 pm

Contemporary art in a modern building in the Design District: paintings, sculpture and multimedia installations, with a garden outside. It is the art stop that fits into an afternoon of walking the district's streets, rather than a day of its own, and it pairs with PAMM on another day for the bigger collection.

Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm, closed Monday and Tuesday. It rates 4.6 from almost fifteen hundred Google reviews. Check the current shows and admission on icamiami.org before you go.

05 · Cuban Miami

Freedom Tower

600 Biscayne Blvd, Downtown · Downtown · Aperto fino alle 6 pm

If you want to understand Cuban Miami in one stop, this is it. The 1925 tower was built for the Miami News, and from 1962 it was the Cuban Refugee Emergency Center, where hundreds of thousands of exiles were processed. The galleries tell the exile story and Operation Pedro Pan, with rotating art shows.

$18 general, $14 for seniors 62 and up, $12 for youth 7 to 18 and students; kids 6 and under, veterans and active military free. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm, and it sometimes closes for events, so check the site. The Metromover stops across the street. An hour to 90 minutes is enough.

Museum of Miami
06 · City history

Museum of Miami

101 W Flagler St, Downtown · Brickell

The city history museum long known as HistoryMiami, now renamed, a Smithsonian affiliate on the downtown Cultural Plaza. The permanent galleries run from the Tequesta through Spanish Florida, the railroad and boom years, to the Cuban, Haitian and Latin American arrivals. On a first trip it puts every other stop in context.

Open Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 5 pm, last entry 4:30. Adults $15, seniors and students $10, kids 6 to 12 $8, under 6 free. The Government Center Metrorail and Metromover station is a block away. Allow 90 minutes to two hours, and expect the block outside to feel empty on weekends.

07 · Design and propaganda

The Wolfsonian

1001 Washington Ave, South Beach · South Beach · Aperto fino alle 9 pm

The smartest hour you can spend in South Beach. Posters, furniture, industrial design, glass and propaganda from about 1850 to 1950, showing how design sold products and politics. The building, a 1927 storage warehouse with an ornate facade, and its lobby are worth seeing on their own.

Free every Friday from 6 to 9 pm and free for Florida residents at any time; otherwise adults $12, and seniors, students and kids 6 to 18 $8. Open 10 am to 6 pm Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and until 9 pm on Friday. It is dense and object-heavy, which bores some kids. Ocean Drive is two blocks east.

08 · Big collection

Rubell Museum

1100 NW 23rd St, Allapattah · Wynwood

A private contemporary collection built by Mera and Don Rubell over decades, in dozens of galleries in a converted industrial complex in Allapattah, at the western edge of Wynwood. Large paintings and installations, early-career artists next to big names. It leans challenging rather than pretty, and that is the reason to go.

Adults $18; seniors, students and youth 7 to 18 $14; 6 and under free. Open 11:30 am to 5:30 pm Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and until 7:30 pm Friday and Saturday, closed Monday and Tuesday. Superblue, the walk-in light and digital art space, is directly across the street, from $34 on weekdays.

Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach
09 · Free, outdoors

Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach

1933-1945 Meridian Ave, Miami Beach · South Beach

Public art that stays with you. Architect Kenneth Treister built the memorial around a huge bronze arm covered with sculpted figures, reached through a narrow passage and ringed by a reflecting pool, with a granite wall of names and a photo history. Admission is free, and a visit takes 30 to 45 minutes.

We have no posted hours and listings disagree, so check the memorial's site before going. Treat it as a memorial, not a photo stop: keep voices low, and talk to younger kids first, since the sculpture can upset them. It sits next to the Convention Center, and the Miami Beach Botanical Garden next door is a calm walk afterward.

The Ancient Spanish Monastery
10 · Older than Florida

The Ancient Spanish Monastery

16711 W Dixie Hwy, North Miami Beach · Midtown · Aperto fino alle 4 pm

A cloister built between 1133 and 1141 near Segovia, Spain, bought by William Randolph Hearst in 1925, shipped in numbered crates, left in a New York warehouse for decades and put back together here in the 1950s. It is now a working Episcopal church with gardens, and an hour among the stone is enough.

Open Wednesday to Saturday 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday 2 to 5 pm, closed Monday and Tuesday, but it often closes for weddings and church events, especially on weekends; check the monthly schedule on its site the day before. Dress modestly. Oleta River State Park is nearby if you want the afternoon outside.
