Resumo

  • Daytime: Average highs of 76 to 77°F all month.
  • Night: Average lows of 61 to 62°F; pack a jacket for evenings.
  • Rain: About 1.6 inches: the driest month of the year in the normals.
  • Ocean: About 72°F at NOAA's Virginia Key station: brisk for a long swim.
  • Big dates: Orange Bowl Jan 14; Art Deco Weekend Jan 15-17; marathon Jan 31.

January is Miami's dry, mild month: sunny days in the mid 70s, cool nights near 61°F and the least rain of the year, which makes it ideal for walking, museums and Art Deco Weekend, as long as you accept that the ocean feels cool.

The short answer

January is the coolest and driest stretch of the Miami year. National Weather Service normals for Miami International Airport hold the average high at 76 to 77°F for the entire month, with the average low around 61 to 62°F. Rain adds up to about 1.6 inches, the smallest monthly total in the 1991 to 2020 record.

That makes January the month for being outside on foot: Ocean Drive's Art Deco District, the gardens in Coral Gables, a long day on Key Biscayne. What it does not guarantee is warm sea water. NOAA's Virginia Key station averages about 72°F in January, which many visitors find bracing rather than relaxing.

The calendar is busy in the middle and at the end of the month: a College Football Playoff semifinal at the Orange Bowl, the 50th Art Deco Weekend over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, and the Miami Marathon on the last Sunday.

The mid-January crunch

The Orange Bowl on Thursday, January 14, Art Deco Weekend from Friday the 15th and the federal holiday on Monday the 18th land back to back. That five-day run is the busiest part of the month for South Beach hotels and Ocean Drive parking. If you are coming for Art Deco Weekend, book early and plan to walk or take the trolley rather than look for a space near Lummus Park.

The last weekend is the other pressure point. The marathon finishes at Bayfront Park downtown on Sunday, January 31, and course closures make early-morning driving hard on race day. Outside those two windows, January is a calm month to visit, with the dry weather of winter and none of the March crowds.
