Book it for a date or a birthday when you want real Iberian ham, squid ink rice and Basque cheesecake. The trade-off is price: small plates run in the twenties and thirties, and the bill climbs fast.

Start with the raciones

The Cinco Jotas jamón ibérico de bellota is $35, and it's the plate that tells you what kind of place this is. Add the ham croquetas with aioli de piparras ($19) and the matrimonio, toasted bread with tomato and both pickled and salted anchovies ($22). For something rarer, the tortilla de cangrejo a la donostiarra pairs snow crab and caviar for $29. The hot dog de txistorra, soft Basque chorizo with piquillo ketchup and house fries, is the playful order. A plain potato tortilla at $12 is the cheapest way in.

Rice, fish and the big steak

Order one arroz for the table. The arroz de carabinero, creamy rice with red shrimp, is $39, and the squid ink rice is $30. On the fish side, local snapper comes with a txakoli and caviar beurre blanc for $44, and roasted lubina with clams and green sauce is $48. There's a catch of the day at market price. Meat eaters can go for the prime ribeye at $110, which is a special-occasion number. Finish with the Basque cheesecake ($15), the dessert this region is known for.

Casa Xabi opens at noon every day, which makes a long Grove lunch a smart way to try it. Dinner runs until 10 pm Monday through Wednesday and 10:30 pm Thursday through Sunday. Chef Xabi grew up in San Sebastián and, per the restaurant, cooked in Michelin-starred kitchens before opening here. It sits on Commodore Plaza, so you can walk the Grove before or after.
