Haulover Park suits people who want a full-service beach day with easy parking, lifeguards and space; the trade-off is that it is far from the city, and part of the sand is a clothing-optional beach.

Why you go

You come for a beach that is easy to use. There are large parking lots right behind the sand, lifeguarded swimming year-round, a marina with charter fishing, a dog park, and a wide lawn where people fly kites in the ocean breeze. The northern third of the beach is the county's official clothing-optional section. It rates 4.7 from more than 18,000 Google reviews, the most of any beach park in this guide.

When to go

Google lists 8 am to 5 pm daily, which matches the park office, and the county says the lots close one hour before sunset. Weekday mornings are calm and open. The county names summer Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm and holiday weekends as peak time, when lots can fill. Late afternoon on the lawn is the best time for kite flying, with a steady wind off the water.

Know before you go

Parking is $7 for cars Monday to Thursday, with a $1 surcharge in the North Lot and Lot 1, and $10 on weekends and holidays. Flotation devices are not allowed on the beach. Dogs are allowed on the sand only between lifeguard towers 2 and 3, sunrise to sunset. The clothing-optional area runs between towers 12 and 16, so families usually set up at the south end. Bal Harbour Beach is just south and quieter.
