The Miami River fish houses

The most Miami way to eat seafood is on the working stretch of the Miami River, just west of downtown, where the fish houses sell from their own boats. Garcia's Seafood Grille & Fish Market at 398 NW North River Drive has been family-owned for more than 50 years and still runs a retail fish market next to the dining room. The menu is short on fuss: a mahi-mahi sandwich is $16 and a grouper sandwich $20, either grilled, blackened or fried. The whole yellowtail snapper, which the menu calls the dish, is at market price. Conch fritters are $20 and cracked conch $22; conch chowder is a Tuesday special and lobster bisque a Saturday one.

Casablanca Seafood Bar & Grill is next door at 400 NW North River Drive. It says its fish comes in daily on its own boats and it has more than 30 years in the seafood trade. It opens at noon every day and stays open until 10 pm, or 11 pm on Friday and Saturday. Happy hour is Monday to Friday from 3 to 7 pm with a two-for-one offer. Know the catch before the check arrives: an 18% service charge is added to all checks.

Neither place is fancy, and that is the point. You sit over brown river water with tugboats and fishing boats going past, a few minutes from Brickell's towers.

The cheap lunch, the Greek fish room and the stone crab question

La Camaronera at 1952 West Flagler Street is the fast option: a fish counter known for the pan con minuta, a fried snapper sandwich on Cuban bread. It opens at 11:30 am and closes at 4 pm Sunday to Thursday and 8:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, so it is a lunch stop most of the week.

Estiatorio Milos at 730 1st Street in South of Fifth is the dressed-up end of the list, a Greek fish restaurant whose chef sources the daily catch from local fishermen. It serves lunch from noon to 3 pm, dinner from 5:30 pm to 11 pm, until midnight on Friday, and runs straight through from noon to midnight on Saturday.

Stone crabs are a season, not a menu item. Garcia's lists them from October 15 to May 1, priced by size at market rate. Joe's Stone Crab at 11 Washington Avenue is the restaurant people mean when they say stone crabs: lunch Wednesday to Sunday 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, dinner from 5 pm every night. If you cannot get a table, Joe's Take Away next door needs no reservation. Our stone crab guide has the season details.
