Nota della redazione

Metrorail is not a subway that covers the city. It is one line through the middle of Miami-Dade, from Palmetto in the north to Dadeland South, with a branch to the airport. It does not go to Miami Beach or Wynwood. What it does well is the airport to downtown, Brickell, Vizcaya and Coconut Grove, for $2.25, without traffic. Plan around that and it is the best deal in town.

The two lines

The Green Line runs from Palmetto, the northernmost station, to Dadeland South, the southernmost. The Orange Line runs to Miami International Airport on weekdays. The county describes the system as 25 miles of dual track.

On weekends the Orange Line runs only as an Airport Shuttle between Earlington Heights and MIA, every 15 minutes. On weekdays the county says Orange Line trains between Dadeland South and Earlington Heights come every 15 minutes.

Metrorail runs from 5 am to midnight, seven days a week. The county's printed guide warns that guideway and track maintenance happens on weeknights from 8 pm to midnight and all day on weekends, when trains share one track in the work area and can run less often.

Paying: tap and go

You do not need to buy an EASY Card. Metrorail gates take contactless Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, and the same cards in Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay or Fitbit Pay. Discover is not accepted, and the county warns that some cards issued outside the U.S. may not work during system upgrades.

Fare capping is automatic: after the third Metrorail ride in a day, the day's fare stops at $5.65. It only works if you tap the same card or device every time. One card pays for one rider, so a couple needs two cards or phones.

Take the card out of your wallet before you tap. If two cards touch the reader, it may charge the wrong one or not open the gate.

Metrorail to the airport

The Metrorail station at the airport is MIA station at the Miami Intermodal Center, a short ride on the free MIA Mover from the terminal's third level, between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages.

On weekdays, board a northbound Orange Line train from downtown or Brickell straight to MIA. From north of Earlington Heights, or on any weekend, take a Green Line train to Earlington Heights and change to the Orange Line or the Airport Shuttle. Either way it is $2.25.

For Miami Beach, Metrorail is the wrong train. Miami International lists the Route 150 Miami Beach Airport Express from the MIA Metrorail station to Miami Beach, every 30 minutes, 6 am to 11:40 pm, also $2.25.

The 1914 bayfront villa has its own Metrorail stop. Vizcaya says the walk from the station is about 10 minutes: over the pedestrian bridge across US 1, along SW 32nd Road to South Miami Avenue, and across to the entrance.

The free Coral Way trolley also stops at the station. Check Vizcaya's hours and tickets on its own site before you go.
