You come for a big family collection of contemporary art gathered by Mera and Don Rubell over decades, shown across dozens of galleries in a converted industrial complex in Allapattah, at the western edge of Wynwood. Expect large paintings, installations and work by artists early in their careers next to big names. It rates 4.7 from 1,027 Google reviews. Allow about two hours to see it at a steady pace.

When to go

Google lists Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 am to 7:30 pm, closed Monday and Tuesday. Weekday visits are quiet; the later Friday and Saturday hours are good for an evening before dinner in Wynwood. It is indoors, so it works on a rainy day. Hours shift around events, so check the site.

Know before you go

The museum's site lists adults at $18 and seniors, students and youth 7 to 18 at $14, with children 6 and under free. Food and drink are not allowed in the galleries. There is metered parking along 23rd Street by the entrance and a valet option. Superblue is directly across the street, and Wynwood's murals and restaurants are a short drive or a longer walk east.
