Resumo

  • Stay on the Beach if: the trip is about the ocean, Art Deco streets and walking to dinner.
  • Stay downtown if: you have a cruise, a game or show, or want the train to the airport.
  • Room tax: 14% in Miami Beach, 13% in the City of Miami.
  • Free rides: Beach trolley 8 am to 11 pm; downtown Metromover 5:30 am to 10 pm.
  • Airport: Metrorail to downtown: $2.25, rising to $2.75 on January 1, 2027.

Stay in Miami Beach for a beach holiday and downtown or Brickell for a city trip built around trains, the port and events; if you have five nights or more, split them and get both.

Nota do editor

People ask Miami vs South Beach as if they were rivals, but Miami Beach is its own city across Biscayne Bay, and South Beach is its southern end. The real choice is which side of the bay you sleep on. The Beach wins on sand and the Art Deco evening walk; downtown and Brickell win on transit, the cruise port and arenas. Neither side is cheap, and the tax is one point higher on the Beach.

What you get on Miami Beach

The South Beach day is simple: beach in the morning, a walk through the Art Deco district in the evening, dinner within a few blocks. The Miami Beach Architectural District, listed on the National Register in 1979, runs from 6th Street to Dade Boulevard and from the ocean to Alton Road, with 960 historic buildings. Lummus Park, the 26-acre strip of sand and paths in front of Ocean Drive, is open from sunrise to midnight, with restrooms at 6th, 10th and 14th Streets.

Getting around is cheap if you leave the car: the city's free trolley runs four routes from 8 am to 11 pm, about every 20 minutes. With a car, budget for it. Street meters cost $4 an hour in South Beach, and the city garages charge $2 for the first hour up to $20 a day.

The catch is everything off the island. Wynwood, Little Havana, the cruise port and the arenas all mean a causeway, and the traffic on it.

What you get downtown and in Brickell

Downtown works like a city. The Metromover is free and loops through downtown, the Omni area and Brickell, 21 stations from 5:30 am to 10 pm. The City of Miami's own trolleys are free too: the Brickell route runs 6:30 am to 11 pm Monday to Saturday and 8 am to 8 pm on Sunday.

For the airport, Metrorail's Orange Line runs from MIA to downtown for $2.25, every 15 minutes on weekdays. On weekends the Orange Line runs only as an airport shuttle between Earlington Heights and MIA, so you change trains at Earlington Heights. Brightline leaves from MiamiCentral downtown for Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Orlando.

It is the better base for a cruise, a Heat game at Kaseya Center, a show at the Arsht Center or an art day at PAMM. The trade-off is that the nearest real beach is across the bay.
